Two of India’s largest Car Manufacturing companies have entered into an agreement with Inland Waterways Authority of India. Hyundai was first to sign this agreement and India’s largest car company i.e. Maruti Suzuki India Limited is second to sign the agreement with IWAI / Inland Water Authority of India. These companies with transport their cars through inland vessels.
Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai will now start pilot project to implement this agreement of car and vehicle transportation through waterways in India. This mode of transportation has been largely unexplored in India till now. Hardly 5% of total transporation in India is used through the Inland waterways which is very high in different countries like China, UK, America, Brazil, Korea etc. In some countries waterways comprise upto 40% of total transportation. Despite huge potential and comparative cheaper mode our country has not been able to utilize the inland waterways which include rivers, lakes, canals and creeks etc.
Transport Ministry is now taking various initiatives to utilize this unexplored modes of transportation and even various players like Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai are showing their interest in the same.
